Vietnam welcomes SOMS 15’s high-ranking delegations

Director of the Sports Authority of Vietnam (SAV) Dang Ha Viet has confirmed that the country has done preparation activities to host the 15th ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Sports (SOMS-15) that will take place from October 14 - 16 in Vinh Phuc Province.

Vietnam took the right to organise the SOMS-15 and related events at the closing session of the SOMS 14 last year in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Also, at the event, Vietnam took over the ASEAN Chairmanship of the 8th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports (AMMS-8) in 2025.

It is considered a great honour, responsibility and opportunity for Vietnam to enhance the country's position in the international arena.

At the same time, Vietnam can help promote international cooperation in the field of sports, and join hands in developing sports in the region.

Speaking about the SOMS-15 preparations, Viet said: "As the host country, Vietnam has completed all preparation activities and is ready to organise the meeting at the highest sense of responsibility.

"The success of the meeting will affirm the position and prestige of the Vietnamese sports in the international arena," he said.

The SOMS-15 and related conferences play key role in promoting sports cooperation and sports-related activities between ASEAN member states, international organisations and partner countries such as Japan and China.

During the three-days meeting, delegates will discuss many important issues including the organisation of sports competitions to celebrate the ASEAN Day.

Sharing about activities to celebrate the founding anniversary of the Association of ASEAN, SAV Deputy Director Le Thi Hoang Yen said: "Vietnam was the Chairman of ASEAN in 2020 when many countries were heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic but Vietnam still conducted all works very well.

“Specifically, Vietnam successfully organised the ASEAN Marathon -- an activity connecting the ASEAN community through sports.

At the SOMS-15, Vietnam plans to hold another amazing ASEAN Marathon and make it an annual tournament to celebrate the ASEAN Day. In addition, many other community activities such as international Yoga competitions can be organised and promoted to lure the participation of a large number of regional people.

All are to make a great premise towards the AMMS-8 in 2025, Yen said.

It is the fact that sport not only helps people have a healthy body and mind, but also promotes life values such as respect, integration, fairness and solidarity. These are the goals that the ASEAN community always aims for in its all activities.

Hosting the SOMS-15 is considered a great opportunity for Vietnam to propose additional initiatives in its role as the host country and strengthen Vietnam's position in the international arena, contributing to push international sports cooperation.
