Vietnam Para Swimming Team wins 7 gold medals, breaks games record on Opening Day of 13th ASEAN Para Games

On January 21, the first official competition day of the 13th ASEAN Para Games in Thailand, Vietnam’s Para Swimming Team delivered an impressive start by winning seven gold medals, reaffirming swimming as one of the key sports of the Vietnam Para Sports delegation.

Vi Thi Hang delivering an impressive performance and breaking the Games record in the women’s 50m backstroke (S6–S7). Hang finished in 45.63 seconds, smashing the previous record of 49.13 seconds. This was her second gold at the Games, following her earlier win in the women’s 100m freestyle (S7) with a time of 1 minute 20.68 seconds.

Competing at the Korat Aquatics Center, Thai­land, Vietnamese swimmers enjoyed a highly successful day, claiming medals in a series of their strongest events right from the morning session. The highlight of the day belonged to Vi Thi Hang, who surged ahead immediately after the start in the 50m backstroke S7, maintained a clear lead, and touched the wall first to set a new Games record.

Alongside Vi Thi Hang’s record-breaking victory, Vietnam’s swimmers continued their strong momentum by securing six more gold medals in other events. Vo Huynh Anh Khoa claimed gold in the men’s 400m freestyle, S8; Nguyen Van Hanh won the men’s 100m breaststroke, SB11; Trinh Thi Bich Nhu took gold in the women’s 100m breaststroke, SB5; Vi Thi Hang added another title in the women’s 100m freestyle, S7; Le Thi Dung triumphed in the women’s 100m freestyle, S8; and Ha Van Hiep topped the podium in the men’s 50m backstroke, S4.

In addition to the seven gold medals, the Vietnam Para Swimming Team also earned four silver medals and six bronze medals on the opening day, making a significant contribution to the overall success of the Vietnam Para Sports delegation.

The strong results on the opening day were not only impressive in terms of medal count but also served as a vivid testament to the determination, resilience, and extraordinary spirit of Vietnam’s para athletes. According to the competition schedule, swimming will continue with 22 events across various distances and sport classes in the coming days, promising further successes for the Vietnamese team at the 2026 ASEAN Para Games.
