Inauguration of the ASEAN-Japan Seminar on Developing Physical Education and Sports Teachers for Persons with Disabilities

On the morning of February 24, at the Army Hotel Hanoi, the ASEAN-Japan Workshop on Promoting Physical Education Teachers and Sports for People with Disability officially kicked off with the participation of over 40 international representatives from regional countries and Japan. Director General of the Sports Authority Đặng Hà Việt, Deputy Director Lê Thị Hoàng Yến attended the event.

Director Đặng Hà Việt stated: the project to develop a team of physical education teachers (PETE) and sports for people with disabilities (SPD), implemented in collaboration with Nippon Sport Science University (NSSU) and Tsukuba University in Japan. The ASEAN-Japan Action Program on sports projects focuses on training physical education and sports teachers for people with disabilities in ASEAN member countries, which has been implemented since 2021. This is one of the activities within the series of events under the ASEAN-Japan Action Plan on Sports, which was agreed upon by the 1st ASEAN-Japan Sports Ministers' Meeting (held in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar in October 2017). The meeting identified four priority areas for ASEAN-Japan Sports Cooperation: building a team of physical education teachers and coaches; women in sports; sports for people with disabilities; and anti-doping efforts in sports.

Implementing the ASEAN Sports Action Plan for the period 2021-2025, the Japanese government is carrying out the ASEAN-Japan Action Program for sports projects, focusing on training a team of Physical Education Teachers (PETE) and Sports for Persons with Disabilities (SPD) with the aim of improving the quality of PETE and SPD in ASEAN member countries. With the role of chairing the ASEAN Senior Officials' Meeting on Sports in 2024 and 2025, Viet Nam is honored to co-host this workshop.

The event is organized with the aim of fostering a comprehensive ASEAN Community, where sports play an essential role in cultural and social development, community connection, and peace promotion.

"With the desire to strengthen the spirit of solidarity and friendship among the people of the region, continent, and the world, I hope this workshop will continue to discuss and provide positive contributions to perfect the project in accordance with the proposed criteria." Viet Nam will strive to coordinate with ASEAN member countries, partners, and international friends, contributing positively to peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region and the world," emphasized Director Đặng Hà Việt.

Speaking at the workshop, Professor, Dr. Yoshinori OKADE, Director of the Project the Project for Promoting Physical Education Teachers and Sports for People with Disability, also expressed his joy and pride in being part of this important event. Professor, Doctor. Yoshinori OKADE emphasized that the presence of delegates and distinguished guests at the seminar is a testament to the importance of the event.

Along with that, Professor, Dr. Yoshinori OKADE expressed his appreciation for Viet Nam's role, especially as the host of this seminar, along with the ASEAN Secretariat, Japan, and the member countries of the region throughout the project's implementation process. All project members have made great efforts over the past nearly four years to achieve encouraging results in the development of physical education and sports teachers for people with disabilities. Therefore, Dr. Yoshinori OKADE hopes that the delegates will actively discuss, exchange, and share information about the progress and issues identified during the implementation phase of the revised "Action Plan" over the past three years of the project activities, with the aim of enhancing the development of comprehensive physical education and sports teachers for people with disabilities in each ASEAN member country.

At the first working session of the workshop, professors, doctors, and project associates, along with delegates, listened to representatives from various countries present a summary of the progress in implementing the action plan for developing the physical education teacher workforce. In the afternoon of the same day, the delegates will discuss in groups the content of developing ASEAN standards for the comprehensive development of physical education teacher teams.
