The Japan-ASEAN Gender Equality in Sports Seminar will be held in early 2025 in the Philippines

On the morning of December 6, Vice Chairwoman of the Sports Authority, Lê Thị Hoàng Yến, attended an online meeting to gather information related to the Japan-ASEAN Gender Equality in Sports Seminar, which will take place in the Philippines in January 2025.

The Japan-ASEAN Gender Equality in Sports Seminar will take place in two days, January 8-9, 2025, at TRYP by Wyndham Mall of Asia Manila, Philippines, gathering 22 representatives from ASEAN member countries.

Vice Chairwoman Le Thi Hoang Yen attended the online meeting to prepare for the Seminar, which will be held in the Philippines.

The seminar is organized to identify specific data for each country and data collection methods to monitor gender equality in the sports policies of ASEAN countries.

During the two days of the seminar, delegates will have access to reports on the results of workshops and projects implemented in previous years. In addition, many issues will be presented and discussed at the seminar, such as the importance of data and why data is crucial for sports policy and gender equality; what global initiatives and strategies on sports policy and data collection are, and why data is important.

The seminar will also present specific studies and data to clarify each topic; at the same time, it will develop a strategic plan to collect, observe, and evaluate gender.

The goal of the seminar is for representatives from each participating country to be able to identify the indicators for sports policies in their respective countries. Each country can identify indicators and data by gender based on national objectives.

Change the perspective and raise awareness in each country about reviewing and collecting data based on indicators, as well as understanding which relevant organizations need to participate in data collection.

In order to support ASEAN countries in implementing this method in each country, a list of common gender-disaggregated data collected from member countries has been compiled.

The Japan-ASEAN Gender Equality in Sports Workshop Seminar in the Philippines is a part of the project titled "ASEAN-Japan Action on Sports-Gender Equality." In 2021, the Japanese government organized a four-day workshop in the spirit of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, aimed at ten (10) ASEAN member countries, to enhance cooperation between ASEAN and Japan by promoting gender equality in sports. The workshop was attended by government officials from ASEAN member countries, heads of the Women in Sports Committee of the National Olympic Committee, and young female sports leaders who developed a feasible set of strategies for each country and nurtured a generation of leaders who could contribute to the project's goals.

The online session took place on the morning of December 6th.

The project is implemented in multiple phases to promote community-based programs, sports, and physical activities that are non-discriminatory and accessible to all facilities, including open spaces, suitable environmental conditions, for all ages and levels, contributing to the ASEAN Sports Work Plan in period 2021-2025.

In the fiscal year 2025, the seminar will focus on integrating gender into sports policies/Five-Year Strategic Plans for gender equality in sports in each ASEAN country.
