GM Le Quang Liem climbs to world No.17 in latest FIDE rankings

Vietnam’s chess grandmaster Le Quang Liem has moved up one place to 17th in the latest world rankings released by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), according to the February 2026 list. The Ho Chi Minh City–born player moved has a new Elo rating of 2,731, up from 2,729, rising from 18th place.

In November last year chess player Le Quang Liem earned Vietnam's best result in the FIDE World Cup 2025 after advancing to the fifth round of the tournament in India. The player also represented Vietnam at the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships in Qatar in December 2025.

Currently training and working in the United States, Le Quang Liem remains active in major international tournaments to accumulate points and maintain his competitive form. He is expected to represent Vietnam at the 2026 World Chess Olympiad, scheduled to run in Uzbekistan from September 15 to 28.

Previously, Liem played for the Vietnamese chess team in the 2024 FIDE Chess Olympiad in Hungary, with the national men's chess team finishing 25th and the women's team placing 23rd.

According to the FIDE rankings, Grandmaster Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son remains rated at 2,600 and is ranked 164th in the world, making him the country’s second-highest ranked male player.
