Nguyen Thanh Duy breaks record at Asian Youth Games 2025

Vietnam celebrated a momentous victory on Monday evening when weightlifter Nguyen Thanh Duy captured the country’s first gold medal in weightlifting at the 2025 Asian Youth Games held in Bahrain, setting a new Asian youth record in the 65kg weight category.

In the clean and jerk event, Thanh Duy began with a bold opening weight of 152kg but failed to complete the lift. Duy regrouped and succeeded at 153kg on his second attempt.

For his final lift, he made a daring decision to go for 156kg. Against the odds, he lifted it successfully, sealing both victory and a new Asian youth record in the 65kg category.

With a total lift of 276kg, Duy claimed the gold medal, while Beibarys Yerseit of Uzbekistan earned silver with 275kg, and Choe Jin Myong of North Korea took bronze with 274kg.

Earlier, Vietnamese athletes had secured five silver and six bronze medals across athletics, taekwondo and weightlifting. With Duy’s gold, Việt Nam rose to 19th in the medal standings.

The Games run until October 31, with Vietnamese competitors still in contention for medals in weightlifting, badminton and martial arts.

In the snatch, Nguyen Thanh Duy only ranked 4th with a score of 120 kg.
