Speaking at the press conference, Deputy Director Le Thi Hoang Yen said: SOMS is held annually, while AMMS is held every two years.
Over the years, SOMS and AMMS have made very practical contributions to the development of regional sports, in which countries have shared experiences from high-performance sports to sports for everyone, from promoting the Olympic movement to sports in schools. In addition, there is a commitment to gender equality in sports, anti-doping... In particular, sports in the region have also strengthened cooperative relationships with leading sports in the continent such as: Japan, China or Korea as well as with international sports organizations such as FIFA, WADA... through the extended conferences of SOMS and AMMS.

In the spirit of cooperation and friendship, Southeast Asian sports have made remarkable progress in recent years, the quality of the SEA Games and ASEAN Paragames, especially in terms of organization, has been constantly improved. In addition, many Southeast Asian athletes have also won medals at the Olympic and ASIAD arenas.
According to Deputy Director Le Thi Hoang Yen, in October 2024, Vietnam was honored to be the Chair, successfully organizing SOMS 15 and related conferences of SOMS with Japan and China. Following the 2-year Chairmanship cycle, we will continue to be the host and chair of SOMS 16 and related conferences from October 13-15. In particular, for the first time, Vietnam will have the honor of being the Chair of the 8th ASEAN Sports Ministers Meeting - AMMS - and the expanded ASEAN Sports Ministers Meeting on October 16 and 17, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Vietnam joining ASEAN (1995).
In the past time, under the direction of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Vietnam Sports Administration - in its permanent role as organizer - has carried out many related tasks so that the preparation for SOMS 16, AMMS8 and related conferences is carried out in the most methodical and thoughtful manner, from content to logistics, security and safety...

The representative of the Organizing Committee of the Congress shares information related to the Conferences
On behalf of the Organizing Committee, Deputy Director Le Thi Hoang Yen expressed her hope that the press and media agencies will support the propaganda work, conveying information, images, and positive results of the Conferences to the public as well as sports fans at home and abroad, thereby contributing to promoting the image of a friendly and hospitable Vietnam, where Vietnamese sports are constantly improving their position in the international arena.
At the press conference, the representative of the Organizing Committee of the Congress also emphasized the important hosting role of Vietnam and the regional stature of the series of events, which gathered about 200 high-level delegates including: Ministers, Deputy Ministers, heads of sports agencies of ASEAN countries, Timor Leste, and representatives of the Sports Ministries/agencies of Japan and China.
Accordingly, at the Conference, the Ministers and Senior Officials will focus on discussing many key contents, comprehensively reflecting the development of regional sports in the new period.

The main points of discussion include the development of professional sports associated with sports science and economics to enhance international competitiveness, in parallel with promoting gender equality and encouraging the participation of women, youth, and people with disabilities in sports activities. The conference will also propose the establishment of an ASEAN High Performance Sports Centre to create an environment for training and professional exchange, thereby raising the level of athletes in the region.
In addition, the preservation and promotion of traditional sports, linked to ASEAN culture and identity, is also an important highlight. The common goal is to promote the role of sports in improving public health, contributing to the implementation of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the region.
This conference is also an opportunity to promote cooperation between ASEAN member countries and dialogue countries (Japan, China) and other international organizations. One of the important highlights at AMMS 8 is the coordination with the ASEAN Secretariat to promote cooperation with partners such as the Republic of Korea, the International Football Federation (FIFA), the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the Regional Anti-Doping Organization (SEARADO).

The conference is expected to adopt Joint Statements and other important documents, and evaluate the implementation results of the ASEAN Sports Action Plan for the period 2021-2025. On that basis, delegates will discuss and develop directions and plans for sports activities for the next period, and approve the ASEAN Sports Cooperation Plan with Japan and China.
The ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports (AMMS) has been held every two years since 2011, serving as an important high-level forum to promote policy exchanges and actions in the field of sports among ASEAN member countries. In 2025, under the rotation mechanism, Vietnam will officially assume the role of chair.
The series of events includes AMMS 8, SOMS 16, the 5th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports + Japan (AMMS + Japan 5), and the 2nd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports + China (AMMS + China 2). The theme of the Conference is “Navigating Sports - Contributing to Sustainable Development”.
