Vietnam rises in FIFA rankings

The points earned from the 2024 ASEAN Cup helped the Vietnam national football team climb two spots in the updated FIFA rankings for January 2025.

Vietnam won the 2024 ASEAN Cup with an impressive record (7 wins, 1 draw), earning an additional 10.22 points, which lifted them to 112th place with 1,175.01 points in the January FIFA rankings.

At the end of 2024, Vietnam finished in 114th place. While this marked a rise of 5 positions compared to mid-2024, when they had fallen to 119th, they are still some distance from the top 100.

Under coach Park Hang-seo, Vietnam reached 96th place in the FIFA rankings and held that position for several years. In Southeast Asia, the Vietnam national team currently ranks behind Thailand (98th place), with a gap of over 50 points.

There are opportunities for coach Kim Sang-sik's team to improve their ranking further if they continue their good form and perform well in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, which will begin at the end of March. According to the draw, Vietnam will compete in Group F along with Malaysia, Nepal, and Laos. The top 6 teams from the qualifying groups will secure a spot in the final round of the 2027 Asian Cup, which will be held in Saudi Arabia from January 7 to February 5, 2027.
