Notable results in 2024
In 2024 the number of people regularly practicing sports and having physical activity nationwide was estimated at 37.5 per cent while the number of families practicing sports regularly was estimated at 28.3 per cent.
Many sports activities made great buzz, attracting many participants such as: Safe Swimming for Drowning Prevention, Olympic Run Day for People’s Health, marathons, football, volleyball and pickleball tournaments, and sports events associated with traditional festivals.
These meaningful mass sports events and activities helped people deeply understand and aware of the effects and role of physical training in improving health, preventing and controlling diseases and improving life quality. On that basis, more and more people voluntarily participated in sports activities.

In 2024, the Sports Authority of Viet Nam (SAV), as a state management agency, actively guided localities to implement the campaign "All people take exercises following the example of great Uncle Ho" associated with the movement "All people unite to build a cultural life" and "New rural construction programme".
SAV also took charge of sport activities to celebrate the New Year and national holidays including the 94th founding anniversary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam (February 3, 1930 - February 3, 2024); and organizing the Olympic Run Day for People's Health and Month of Sports Activities for Everyone to celebrate the 78th anniversary of the Viet Nam's Sports Day (March 27, 1946-March 27, 2024).
In particular, SAV focused on completing the Framework Charter of the 10th National Sports Games and guiding cities and provinces to organize their local Sports Games to look towards the 10th National Sports Games in 2026.
The agency also organized the Safe Swimming for Drowning Prevention Programme for the period 2021-2030.
Other activities were its coordination with localities to organize 27 national-level mass sports tournaments, attracting over 18,000 officials and athletes; 13 professional training courses for over 1,200 officials and collaborators, trainers, coaches, referees, and grassroots sports instructors.
It was said that the main targets of mass sports in 2024 was basically completed.
In addition, SAV proactively coordinated with ministries, businesses, and organizations at both central and local levels to carry out sport competitions.
SAV coordinated with the Ministry of Education and Training to successfully organize the 13th ASEAN Schools Games in Da Nang and the 10th National Phu Dong Sports Games in Hai Phong.
SAV worked with the Ministry of Public Security to hold the Asian Open Police Taekwondo Championships 2024 and organize other sport activities to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the People's Police Traditional Day
SAV joined hands in sport activities for the Army’s soldiers, militia and self-defense forces; signed a coordination programme with the Viet Nam Trade Union on promoting the sports movement among cadres, civil servants, public employees, and workers, and organized the Viet Nam Trade Union Sports Festival; coordinated with the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee to organize the Summer Holiday Opening Ceremony, Children's Olympic Day and launched a national campaign of ‘All People to Practice Swimming for Drowning Prevention in Thanh Hoa Province.
SAV also collaborated with the Viet Nam Women's Union, the General Department of Vocational Education, the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs to hold sport activities. It also worked with many localities to research, preserve and promote ethnic minority people’s sports such as: pig fighting in Ha Giang Province, lay co (similar to rock paper scissors game) in Cao Bang, stilt walking in Nghe An and danh mang (mang trees’ seed shooting) in Hoa Binh.
Along with organizing sports activities for everyone, SAV carefully trained elite athletes to participate in the 2024 Paris Paralympics. As a result, seven athletes qualified for the Games and powerlifter Le Van Cong won a bronze medal in the men’s 49kg category with a lift of 171kg.
2025’s key plans
Following the direction of the Prime Minister at a conference summarizing the work of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2024 and the work plans for 2025, the sports industry will implement seven key tasks, of which the field of mass sports is set to focus on comprehensive and effective development.
Specifically, the number of people who practice sports regularly is to reach 38.3 per cent, and the number of families who practice sports to reach 29 per cent.
SAV have to widely encourage and spread the sports movement to everyone and in regions; continue to promote the campaign "All people take exercises following the example of great Uncle Ho", the “Safe Swimming for Drowning Prevention” programme and other projects on accident, injury and child abuse prevention.
In addition, SAV will continue to promote and effectively implement guidance for localities to organize Sports Games at all levels towards the 10th National Sports Games in 2026. The unit will coordinate with ministries, businesses and organizations to implement sports activities for everyone across the country.
SAV will also focus on carefully training quality athletes with disabilities to attend international sports events in 2025 while organize national mass sports tournaments and training courses as planned.
