Dang Hoang Son wins the championship and qualifies for the International Master title at the 2025 Grandmaster – International Master Tournament

Dang Hoang Son won the championship for the first time at the tournament after the final round (round 9) held on January 15.

After completing 9 rounds of standard chess, Dang Hoang Son scored a total of 7 points, leading the standings and winning the gold medal in the International Master category. The second place went to chess player Vo Thanh Ninh (6.5 points), and the third place went to Pham Cong Minh (5 points).

The organizers announced that Dang Hoang Son's result has been updated on the World Chess Federation (FIDE) rating system. He is now eligible to be awarded the International Master title by FIDE.

Earlier, in the first round of the 2025 Grandmaster – International Master Tournament (which ended on January 8), Dang Hoang Son competed in the International Grandmaster category and won with 6 points. In addition to Dang Hoang Son, Vietnamese chess also recorded Dang Anh Minh achieving the International Master title at this event.

This year, the tournament saw 40 international players from India, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Vietnam participating. In round 2, players competed in three categories: International Grandmaster, International Master, and FIDE Master.

Players’ Elo ratings will be updated in FIDE's February 2025 rankings. Many familiar names in Vietnamese chess, including Tran Tuan Minh, Dau Khuong Duy, Nguyen Anh Dung, Dinh Nho Kiet, Nguyen Van Huy, and others, also participated in this event.

The Grandmaster – International Master Tournament has been officially recognized by the Department of Sports and Physical Training as part of the national chess competition system starting from 2025.
