Vietnam win one gold and one bronze at the 2024 Asian Chess Championship

In their first participation in the Asian Chess Championship for disabled players, the Vietnamese chess team impressively won one gold and one bronze.

The tournament took place from November 11 to 17, with seventy-nine players from eight countries competing. The Vietnamese team was represented by two athletes, Tran Thi Bich Thuy and Doan Thu Huyen, who competed in the women’s disability category.

Doan Thu Huyen won the gold medal with eight points after nine rounds. Meanwhile, Tran Thi Bich Thuy won the bronze with seven points. The only match Bich Thuy lost was against her own teammate.

Sharing from Kyrgyzstan, the coach of the Vietnamese disabled chess team, Bui Quang Vu, said: "Before participating in the competition, the team's goal was to win medals because both Thu Huyen and Bich Thuy had achieved excellent results at previous Asian and Southeast Asian Para Games. However, at the continental level, competitions are always highly competitive. Through nine rounds, the players made great efforts, worked together, and supported each other effectively, resulting in an outstanding achievement for the team."

The encouraging results at this Asian Championship serve as strong motivation for the Vietnamese Disabled Chess Team as they set their sights on the 2025 World Chess Championship.
