Vietnam wins gold in women's quadrant sepak takraw

On the morning of October 3, the Vietnamese women's quadrant sepak takraw team defeated Thailand 2-1 in the ASIAD 20 final, successfully defending the gold medal they won at ASIAD 19 in 2023.

Under the guidance of head coach Tran Thi Vui, the Vietnamese women's quadrant team—comprising Nguyen Thi Ngoc Huyen, Nguyen Thi My, Tran Thi Ngoc Yen, and Nguyen Thi Yen—delivered a resilient performance against their Thai rivals in the final on the morning of October 3.

Entering the match with confidence, the Vietnamese players quickly took the advantage to claim the first set 15-11. In the second set, Thailand improved their defense and consistently led the score. Despite a valiant comeback by the Vietnamese players to go ahead 14-13, Thailand fought back to win 17-15, leveling the match at 1-1.

Entering the deciding set, Vietnam faced an uphill battle after falling behind 0-3 to Thailand. However, Nguyen Thi My and her teammates quickly regained their composure, leveled the score, and gradually built a lead. Moving from a 6-6 tie to a 12-8 advantage, the Vietnamese team closed out the final set 15-11 to secure an overall 2-1 triumph.

The victory over Thailand allowed Vietnam's women's quadrant team to retain their title at ASIAD 20, continuing the triumph achieved in Hangzhou in 2023. This marks the third time in ASIAD history that Vietnamese sepak takraw has claimed the championship in the women's quadrant event.

Notably, Thailand did not compete in this event at ASIAD 19. At this year's Games, the two teams met in the group stage, where Vietnam won 2-0. In the final, the clash proved intense once again, demanding that the Vietnamese players demonstrate true grit at crucial moments.

The women's quadrant gold medal is the third gold for the Vietnam Sports Delegation at ASIAD 20, following the title in the women's doubles event. This result further cements the standing of Vietnamese women's sepak takraw on the continental stage.
